If there's one hallmark of working in a small or midsized business, it's that full-time IT focus is more of a luxury than a typical practice. Often those tasked with taking care of systems must learn while doing the very tasks they need to know about. Such folks tend to appreciate good sources of technical information wherever they can be found; any of the following list of nonpareils will be worth investigating as time and other responsibilities allow. I've also identified which resources have special focuses, so harried professionals can easily zero in on areas of greatest interest or need at any given moment.

Name Description
Computer Tech Doc Project Basics, OSes, key apps and technologies
Computer Technical Tutorials Directory and ratings for tutorials
Computing.net Computer tech tutorials, discussion and info
CyberTechHelp Free tech information and tech support
How Stuff Works See Computer Stuff section
Lame Industries Networking stuff for newbies and more advanced ITers
LearnThat Free online courses and tutorials
MouseTrax tutorials General and Windows topics
PC911 Tutorials, reviews, forums and more
ShortGuides Short, focused guides to lots of topics
Tech Encyclopedia General definitions and pointers
Tom's Hardware Guide Best general PC hardware resource around
W3Schools Terrific resources and info on Web topics
WhatIs.com General definitions and concepts
WinGuides Windows information galore

Of course, this is just the start of an enormous amount of free training, tutorials, labs, examples and other information readily available online. If you're interested in some particular topic or another, you can always turn to your favorite search engine to find more focused materials. For example, should you wish to learn more about Macromedia Flash, try searching on "Flash tutorial" or "Macromedia Flash tutorial" (Google turns up more than 60,000 responses to the former and more than 5,000 responses to the latter). Careful use of online tools will help you quickly focus on the most useful resources.
