Treo 600

Are you sick of lugging around a cell phone, a camera and your PDA? Well, now there's one excellent device that does it all -- and looks cool while doing it.

The Treo 600 smartphone gives you everything you'd expect from a top-of-the-line mobile phone, such as a built-in speakerphone, mute button, caller ID and crystal-clear phone connectivity. Plus, there's conference calling for up to six participants. You can quickly find and dial anyone in your phonebook by simply typing the first initial or first few letters of the last name. You can assign unique ring tones and even a picture to your contacts so you always know who is calling.

As far as the Web features go, recent advancements made to the Blazer Web Browser allow excellent access to Web sites. Just click on the Web icon and in just a couple of minutes you're surfing away. The color screen provides a clear and pleasant wireless Web browsing experience. The Blazer now supports JavaScript and uses cascading frames to format Web pages for the Treo 600. A nice feature allows you to beam bookmarks from one device to another. You can also send and receive text messages to either another phone or an e-mail address. I liked that the Treo gives you the option of choosing from several pre-written messages (such as the old standby: "Call me!"), and you can include emoticons.

The Treo 600's built-in keyboard makes entering text and accessing information fast and easy. The domed keys and large text make it accurate, too. A five-way navigation button lets you scroll through applications, menus and lists without every having to touch the screen. This is a plus for one-handed action for multitasking professionals. Let's not forget the Palm OS organizer. It gives you all the necessary tools for business, including Calendar (Date Book Plus), Contact List, Memo Pad, To Do List and Advanced Calculator.

The built in VGA digital camera was easy to use and fun. You just click and shoot. Then view and save the picture on your color screen or send it via Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) to either an e-mail address or another MMS-enabled phone. The only drawback was that the pictures were a bit dark and hard to see on the screen. I took a few pictures inside and outside at different times of the day, but I found that they were still dark and a bit fuzzy on the screen.

The silver-colored unit is attractive and lightweight at 4.4 x 2.4 x 0.9 inches. And at only 5.9 oz. it beats lugging around a cell phone and a PDA. I asked a few friends to check out our test version and the overall response was, "I'd buy it." Despite the issue with the pictures being a bit dark and fuzzy on the screen, the Treo 600 is near the top of my list of worthwhile mobile devices.
