Qwest and Microsoft plan partnership to give SMBs desktop VoIP

Qwest Communications International Inc. and Microsoft Corp. have announced a partnership to give small and medium-sized businesses a converged desktop communications product. Qwest plans to combine its OneFlex VoIP service with Microsoft's Solution for Enhanced VoIP, to offer SMBs a package that bundles together VoIP, e-mail, Internet access, collaboration, instant messaging and desktop services.

Qwest and Microsoft expect the service will be available in 2006. Prices will be made available closer to the product launch.

EMC offers SMBs a storage administrator for Exchange

EMC Corp. this week launched EMC Storage Administrator for Exchange software. It targets SMBs by offering SAN storage management, e-mail availability and data migration tools for those using EMC networked storage systems. The software is intended to provide a single user tool for those tasks, which can connect to the Microsoft Exchange System Manager.

EMC Storage Administrator for Exchange is priced per array, starting at $2,000 when deployed with an EMC CLARiiON AX100. The software will be available in early October in the U.S. and U.K.

Symantec offers data protection

Symantec Corp., a security software company based in Cupertino, Calif., announced this week the release of Symantec Backup Exec 10d for Windows Servers software, offering SMBs a data protection product. The software is designed to eliminate backup windows, enable file retrieval and provide disk-to-disk-to-tape data protection.

Symantec Backup Exec 10d and the Backup Exec Continuous Protection Server will be available Oct. 10. Pricing for Backup Exec 10d starts at roughly $795.

Network management automation appliance for SMBs

KACE Networks Inc., an IT automation company based in Mountain View, Calif., has announced the release of its KBOX IT management suite 2.0 server appliance, designed to manage network nodes.

KACE targets network administrators at midmarket companies by seeking to reduce the cost and complexity of managing the inventory, distribution, patches, security, compliance, messaging, licensing and performance demands for network nodes.

Prices for the KBOX appliance 2.0 start at $7,500 for a 100-node network.

SMB file management and backup software

Tanagra Inc., based in Laguna Niguel, Calif., announced this week a file management and backup software product aimed at SMBs.

Tanagra's Memeo software seeks to protect PC and notebook files by using a range of available storage locations, like internal or external hard disks, online servers, or other storage systems connected to a local network. The optional iDisk feature provides a disaster protection option by storing data online and off-site without physically changing tapes or drives.

Prices for Tanagra's Memeo software begin at $29.95 for one user. The price steps down to $14.95 for 51 to 150 users.

Switchvox announces IP PBX phones for SMBs

Switchvox, a San Diego, Calif.-based provider of open source PBX and VoIP phone systems for SMBs, has announced the release of Switchvox SOHO. Aimed at SMBs, Switchvox SOHO works with the SIP-compatible hardware and software phones as well as standard analog handsets. Prices for the Switchvox SOHO start at $995.

The company's flagship product, Switchvox, has been upgraded to offer additional features and is available for $2,495.
