Want to improve your IT organization? Here are some common inhibitors to success and how to work around them, according to Gartner Inc. analyst Mika Krammer:

Problem: A lack of formalized policies and processes, which can lead to chaos.
Fixes: Establish governance processes. Create advisory forums. Decide who makes critical decisions, and hold them accountable.

Problem: The organization has a short-term IT outlook.
Fix: Create a strategic plan.

Problem: Expectations between IT and business are misaligned.
Fixes: Set common goals at the outset of projects. Choose milestones and metrics for success.

Problem: Issues with managing internal and external IT resources.
Fix: Identify the roles, knowledge and skills needed.

Problem: A lack of appropriate IT performance metrics.
Fix: Quantify the savings, added revenue or value that IT projects will bring to business operations.
