Dos and Don'ts for CIOs Touch on IT Spending, IT Governance and More

Gartner Inc. has 10 new tips for CIOs. Check out No. 2, and you'll find out that green is the color for IT execs in 2007. As for No. 8 (for which we needed an explanation), Gartner Inc. analysts say that if CIOs plan to spend accrued savings, they should be specific, such as by articulating spending this way: "Money saved from Q2 server consolidation is slated for remote laptops in Q3." Got it? Now go get 'em!

Dos:

  1. Create an IT leadership generation succession plan.
  2. Improve the environmental performance of IT (recycling, energy use, etc.).
  3. Provide incentives for true innovators on staff.
  4. Help HR become strategic.
  5. Improve front-line business experience.
  6. Re-establish visibility of total enterprise IT spending.
  7. Get hands-on with new trend-leading technologies

Don'ts:

  1. Return savings from cost efficiencies.
  2. Treat IT governance as procedure.
  3. Obsess about the minutiae of technology.
