Globalization has become the new paradigm for business, and midmarket companies need to adapt to survive. Rudolf Melik, CEO of software maker Tenrox, offers a recipe for change in The Rise of the Project Workforce: Managing People and Projects in a Flat World (Wiley).
Melik says businesses must synthesize four aspects of their operations -- human capital management, project management, business process management and cost/revenue accounting -- into a single entity he calls project workforce management. How? IT has a lot to do with it. Combining the tools and technologies that support these functions will result in a business-critical enterprise system that improves productivity, reduces compliance and overhead costs, and yields a substantial revenue increase.
Melik's company, of course, sells workforce management software, but his book abstracts principles that CIOs can apply to their own IT organization without rolling out new systems. "Today's companies will have to learn how to function in a short-term, project-based business world," Melik says. "Unfortunately for many companies, this skill set is not yet their strong suit."
