Jim Andreoni

TITLE: VP of IT and CIO, Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin Inc.

AGE: 52

INDUSTRY: Nonprofit

SALARY: $130,000 (base)

REVENUE: $219 million (the largest U.S. contributor to Goodwill Industries)

VARIED DEGREES: I am a licensed social worker, and I have an MBA.

WHY YOU WENT INTO IT: I was CEO of a health clinic and was always trying to get staffers away from mundane work. I was always looking to IT for ways to automate.

BEST ADVICE EVER RECEIVED: Pay attention to your people; they have the answers.

BEST TECHNOLOGY DECISION: Moving into programming languages that schools are teaching now (.NET, for example).

BIGGEST IT CHALLENGE: Finding the speed we need for a large-scale WAN and LAN system. We are on the brink of both video and VoIP.

BEST PERSONALITY TRAIT: I would like to think I've got a great sense of humor.

WORST PERSONALITY TRAIT: I can seem too rapid-fire when it comes to delivering messages.

HOBBY: Scuba diving

ALTER-EGO CAREER: I'd be a marine biologist, which kind of goes with the scuba diving.

CURRENT READING: Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast: The Evolutionary Origins of Belief by L. Wolpert. Religion seems to be so divisive. I'm trying to read things that help me sort out who we all are.
