If you are considering hiring an executive coach, start your search among your IT colleagues, and ask for referrals, experts say. We checked in with several coaches for their advice on finding that special someone to give you a career boost.
- Make sure the candidate has coach-training credentials and several client references.
- Identify your objectives so you get the right type of coaching (executive coaching versus career management, for example).
- Ask for a free session to test the chemistry and coach's methodology. Interview at least three coaches to compare their approaches.
- Don't expect specific marching orders. "The coaching model is about interacting and communicating with clients in a way that draws [their goals] out from them," says Henry Barbey, director of the New York Center for Coaching. "Most good coaches won't tell you what they think you should do."
- Check out these resource-rich organizations online: the International Coach Federation, the IT Coaches Special Interest Group and Coach University.
